Sauvignon Blanc
Aromas of tropical fruit, mineral, and spice are the nose for this fourth year of using the grapes from the vineyard of Lori Kautz. Lush and ripe with flavors of melon, ginger, and spice leads to a clean finish with enough body to enjoy with spicy Asian or BBQ.

Grenache Rose
The nose of this wine is all strawberries and cream. In the mouth again with strawberries and cream, but then also fresh cranberry there. If you’re familiar with the Plumeria, (the small flower used on fresh leis from Hawaii), then you will pick up this and carnation in the flavor. Finishes with a peach skin. Enjoy this summer with Giants baseball.

Meritage
Another first time vintage for Matt begins with fresh cut hay, blackberries and cherries in the nose. It seems similar to the Cab, but fuller in the mouthfeel and softer in the palate. Again you will find currant, dried cherries, hay and cassis (very attractive up front). Huge long finish. We’re very exciting about this wine.

Sewell
This Rhone blend’s name for our dad is a worthy tribute. Syrah, Mourvedre, Petite Sirah, Grenache, and Cinsault come together again (our ’05 vintage had the same components). Flavors of orange blossom, dry cherry, and lavender. Dry, well balanced and complex (like our dad), always a favorite.

Merlot
We would like to start by saying we like Merlot, a lot. The nose has a hint of chocolate with well balanced French Oak. Flavors of mulberry with layers of plum and current. The oak adds depth and complexity. For only two weeks in the bottle, I’m very pleased.

Malbec
Again, this wine was bottled May 19th and tastes quite young. Thick aromas of candied ginger, oak, and raspberry demi-glaze. Malbec is the backbone of a bourdeaux blend. Our 2007 has a rose start, deep rich French Oak, and a long dried cherry finish.

Cabernet Sauvignon
This Cab was bottled May 19th. I wouldn’t recommend drinking or attempting tasting notes for another three months, but I will try. The nose has deep strawberry verging on blackberry. Flavors of French Oak layer the mouthfeel. Black cherry, raspberry, and fennel are prominent. Hints of clove and tobacco linger in the finish. While this wine is young, it shows promise to be another great value coming from the Sierra Foothills.

Mourvedre
While young, this wine starts with bright and sweet fruit characteristics, Tootsie roll, rhubarb and hints of white pepper. The body of this wine is black cherry, earth, plum and pluot. In the near future these fruit tones will really start to show. Pairs well with pork at our upcoming event.

Zinfandel
This Zinfandel comes from three vineyards. One in Amador County, and two here in Calaveras. In addition to floral notes, this wine starts with caramel, chocolate raspberry, and cola in the nose. Tart raspberries, American wood tannins, smoke and tobacco leaf start the mouthfeel. In the mid palate wheat, cornhusk, cut hay lead into a dry finish that is tart. This tells me the wine has an opportunity to last a long time. Pairs well with gourmet pizza, arugula, prosciutto, fine meats and cheeses on a Spring afternoon picnic.

Aromas of smoky raspberry and plum are brought out by the new American Oak barrels used on this familiar Estate Zin. The consistency of this vineyard shows fruit and spice, medium body, and a blackberry, brambly with a long finish.

Beckman Zin
Al Beckman passed away two months ago. Al owned the first vineyard I worked in, and I made my first wine there in 1997. Medium red in color the nose is plum and cider with hints of the 16% alcohol. Spice flavors of Hungarian Oak, then raspberry and blackberry. The finish is long with smoke and paprika. Cheers Al, this vintage in memory of you

Petite Sirah
So dark in color, it is like the toolie fog on a chilly Central Valley winter night. Flavors difficult to describe. This Petite tastes of some yet undiscovered deep, dark, black fruit. Big healthy tannins balanced with bright acidity. Ripe plum and tart cherry lead to a big finish that is classic Petite.
